Happy Thanksgiving!

by ABD 28. November 2011 18:31

HAPPY THANKSGIVING  from ABD!
Let us take this opportunity to express our sincere appreciation for your confidence and loyalty. We are deeply thankful for your business and extend to you our best wishes for a Happy Thanksgiving.

WORDS OF WISDOM
During our 20 Club meeting in Scottsdale, we went to a restaurant, Local Bistro, excellent by the way.  But as I was sitting in a position to see the wall that the staff sees every time they walk out of the kitchen, and in view from some dining tables, I was in awe of what I saw.  Their mission statement is printed in white lettering on a black painted wall. We wish to share this with you as it resonates with us and the philosophy of ABD, it is stated so well.

"A customer is the most important visitor on our premises.
He is not dependent on us.  We are dependent on him.
He is not an interruption of our work.  He is the purpose of it.
He is not an outsider of our business. He is a part of it.
We are not doing him a favor by serving him.
He is doing us a favor by giving us the opportunity to do so."

I asked to see the Manager or Owner, who came to our table with concerns of my needs.  I complimented him on the Statement, and asked his permission to photograph it with my camera as I wished to share with my staff and clients, of course giving him and his restaurant credit. (I apologize my camera photo doesn't read it well.) He was honored and said yes, and then informed me he wished he could take full credit, it is by Ghandi.

WATCH FOR OUR  2012 DESK CALENDAR - COMING SOON!

Happy Halloween!

 HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

FALL - Time of Change

OCTOBER -  Color changes, leaves falling, corn harvest, apples, spiced cider, first frost, first snowfall, corn mazes, ghosts, goblins, pumpkins, haunted houses, bite size candy bars (oh maybe those aren't necessarily October related!).  Isn't this a beautiful time of year? Enjoy and HAPPY HALLOWEEN - Be safe!

SPEAKING OF CHANGE - COLOR FORECASTS FOR 2012
Color permeates our lives from the natural environment to manmade surroundings. Some ancient cultures such as the Egyptians and Chinese used colors to heal. Spas today practice chromotherapy to energize, refresh, or soothe patrons. And businesses incorporate specific palettes that supposedly provoke clients into trusting, buying, or eating more. Among various  color theories, there tend to be common themes in the ways Western society perceives colors: black portrays authority, white symbolizes purity, red stimulates, green calms, blue—the most popular color—relaxes and inspires trust, yellow strains the eyes and incites people to lose temper, while orange projects happiness or enthusiasm, and purple connotes luxury. How we respond to myriad hues and shades isn't so ubiquitous. Everyone reacts with disparate reactions toward a wide range of colors. We don't even agree on how some colors should be classified. What one person insists is green another will be equally certain is blue. But most of us, design expert or not, concur that colors influence our moods and play important roles in home design and construction.

Below, experts predict their favorite shades for 2012 and describe the corresponding feelings they are intended to stir. Consistent among the forecasts is a subtle switch from safe, soothing, and secure palettes to stronger colors that rouse optimism, exuberance, and cheer.

Fashion usually foretells a year or so earlier what shades eventually will permeate home trends. True to form, the largest color forecasting organization, Alexandria, Va.-based Color Marketing Group (CMG), announced this spring that p'zazz, a vibrant deep red-purple, which we have seen in past seasons on the runway, is the "it" color for fall/winter 2011 to 2012. According to CMG's forecast, "expect it to adorn feature walls, accent soft furnishings, and breathe new life into standard hues such as beige, navy, and gray." Alongside p'zazz, honey moon—a golden hue achieved by blending "the sweet earthiness of honey and the romance of a harvest moon" to conjure upbeat realism—is the golden child for home decor in the near future.

Pantone, a global developer of color communications and matching tools, has been predicting stylish colors since 1963. Pantone put together nine palettes for home and interior design that it foresees as popular choices for perspective clients. Collectively called Pantone View Home + Interiors 2012, more than half of the color groupings contain shades of purple along with numerous neutrals and a dash of unusual neon hues created from in-between blends such as a green-yellow bamboo or a gold-orange citrus. The company describes its colors in terms of feelings they evoke. For example, the Nonchalance palette of "comforting pastel pinks, ethereal blues, and soft egret white wrap us in carefree baby blanket colors, harmoniously blending with the more mature taupe, gray, and grape tones." The colors "coax a feeling of tranquility and relaxation with no suggestion of anxiety in the surroundings."

Words of Wisdom  - "Everything Matters"

"Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around."

BATHROOM DESIGN FOR ALL AGES

Design considerations for aging-in-place have become the rule and not the exception. ABD is striving to inquire if this present and/or future design is of interest during our interview process. We believe any remodel or new construction should incorporate it. There is an extraordinary amount of information on universal design and its application, which ABD strives to continually research and stay informed. A good source of information for a design of any size bath can be divided into three key categories — safety, comfort and sanitatiion.

Safety - Tile remains the top product used for flooring in baths. Textured finishes on tile and grout lines create a slip-resistant surface in the bath. Polished marble tile is classic but one of the most dangerous products used in the bath due to its slippery when wet surface. One possible solution is to use a smaller tile size with textured accent tiles to create a slip-resistant surface.

Remove potential tripping hazards at the shower by using a trench, linear channel or tile insert drain. A curbless shower installation for walk-in and roll-in access requires informed space planning and installation.

Grab bar products no longer have the institutional look we associate with them. Towel bars are not grab bars and grab bars are not towel bars. They each have a specific purpose. It is best that we, as a design/build company, anticipate your needs by installing blocking in the shower, tub and toilet area. We will happily leave a diagram of the blocking with you as reference for future use.

Multiple lighting options in the bath provide the best solutions for safety and comfort. With the options available, there is no excuse to install a single light bar over the mirror and call it good design. Sensor technology with recessed lighting at the toe kick space on a vanity provides enough illumination for someone to use the bathroom during the night and not shock the eyes. Several smaller recessed fixtures, rated for damp locations, create better overall illumination. Multiple lighting options and the use of dimmers allow for the needs of the individual user.

Whether a free-standing or platform style, the tub controls should be on the access side. Never should you have to reach across or stand in the tub to turn on the water.

If someone in the home ends up using a walker or wheelchair, a wider door allows them access without obstruction. In a remodel, enlarging a door may not be possible. ABD can offer to use swing clear hinges to increase the door opening clearance by 1½ in. to 1¾ in.

Comfort - Radiant floor heat should be a part of every project. You will notice ABD offers this (it's easy to vouch for it from personal experience!). It works with a variety of flooring types but tile is the best product for the installation. A soft, even, continuous heat in the bath is a benefit for all individuals.

Code dictates the centerline for the toilet should be 16 inches, but generally ABD will design an 18-in. centerline to allow for a more comfortable use of the toilet with the installation of grab bars. It also allows more space for assisted use at the toilet. A closed elongated front will accommodate all users regardless of age or physical ability.

Sanitation - In-wall tank and carrier systems for wall-hung toilets allow for continuous uninterrupted flooring in the toilet area. Depending on the toilet size and mounting, this type of installation can add accessible floor space in a small bath for a wheelchair user.

Instead of the typical combo heat/light/vent unit, consider at-the-source ventilation to reduce moisture and odors. Ventilation units are best on a timer. Depending on the manufacturer, the vent should run for five to 10 minutes after the user leaves the bathroom.

The products on the market give ABD the opportunity to design and build baths without an institutionalized look. Our responsibility as design professionals is to enhance the livability of the home and accommodate the occupants at all stages of life.  Bob and Rita Peterson, Co-Owners of ABD, have both achieved the National Association of Home Builders (in conjunction with AARP thru development) designation of CAPS (Certified Aging in Place Specialists).  Please give us a call at 970.225.2323 or contact us thru our website www.abd-ltd.com.

Testimony from our Clients

"Dear Rita and Bob,

Forgive the tardiness of this note, it in no way reflects our feelings about the amazing place that is home.

From the beginning to the on-time ending we were impressed with the work but more than that, the people we encountered.  Ron White is a star!  It is impossible to put into words our gratitude to him and the contractors he has working with him.  Each person who came were interesting people and very skilled at what they did.

It has been a pleasure working with ABD as they transformed our space into a place we will love till the end of life!!!  Blessings and thanks to each of you."

"Living Larger with Less, How Big is Small?"

Small is a relative term.  For some, a 3000-square-foot house qualifies as small, while others think a home that size rivals the Taj Mahal. Since the housing market collapsed, homes have been shrinking.  The average size of a home peaked in 2007 at 2,521 square feet, the average is now 2,392 in 2010, with 2,386 square feet average in the West, according to figures from the National Association of Home Builders. Sarah Susanka, author of the "Not So Big House" and more recently the "Not So Big Remodeling" book, states "the attributes and benefits of a Not So Big house is a house that's about one-third smaller than you thought you needed but that's filled with the special details that make it completely personal and give it that feeling of 'home' we all crave.  Not So Big puts the emphasis on quality rather than quantity and is designed to fit the way we really live today."

There seems to be the assumption that a small house is cramped, but just the opposite is true. By eliminating the little-used rooms, more of the house is available for everyday use, so that in a well-designed small house, "you are actually living in more square footage than in some larger, newer homes." states Susanka. If you are considering remodeling your home, or purchasing a home, there are three options Susanka sites for remodeling your home in a Not So Big way.

  • Work within the existing footprint
    • Don't assume you have to add on.
    • Generally, depending on your needs, with space planning you don't have to change the original footprint by removing or opening up a wall, adding built in's, or redesigning the way you move thru a room.
  • Bump Out
    • Consider a bump out, or two, if your needs can not be made within the existing footprint.
    • Cutting thru the exterior of the home adds a bigger investment, but adding just a couple feet can make a big difference to the use and aesthetics of the space.
  • Add on just a little
    • Consider adding a little square footage rather than a big addition.
    • This solution adds more investment dollars, but even a small addition can be cost effective when compared to a substantial renovation, moving, or new building needs.

When you've remodeled and made your home fit you to a tee, after you've moved on there will be others who'll recognize the love and attention that has gone into its making and who in turn will want to take care of it with the same diligence you have.  Each new owner will make a few changes of their own, and the home will continue to live on, gaining in character with each set of homeowners.  This is how it has happened over the centuries in Europe and other parts of the world where they know how to build for centuries rather than decades, and this is how it can happen here.  We don't have to keep tearing down and starting over.

That's the potential of all our homes.  There's so much that's possible in home design, so much that can make every dwelling place a better fit and a more expressive reflector of its owners' lifestyles and passions, but to realize the potential, we have to think more creatively, more durably, and more three-dimensionally.  No matter what your house challenges are, and no matter what your budget, there are things you can do to make it a better place to live, both for you today and centuries to come.

ABD appreciates the opportunity to work with you thru our design/build process and help you create your Not So Big, Living Larger with Less Home.  Our designers and consultants will bring the creativity to reflect your lifestyle.  Please call  970.225.2323 or go to our website, www.abd-ltd.com to contact us.  We appreciate your business and referrals, thank you.

Notes from Bob

As many of you are aware, this year I am serving as chairman of the National Association of Home Builders Remodelers Council. It has been interesting, challenging, busy, but fun as well. My most recent activity was to be invited to attend and participate in the University of Harvard’s Joint Center for Housing Studies recent Remodeling Futures Program. Finally, now I can say I’ve went to Harvard!

While there, the future of remodeling activity was discussed. Findings were mixed with general concern over the pace of the economic growth activity nationally and a stalled housing economy causing only modest gains in home improvement spending in 2011.

The (LIRA) Leading Indicator of Remodeling Activity, designed to estimate national spending predicts that nationally spending in remodeling activities will grow only 0.2%, much less than hope for.

On the good news side, the Mountain West Region, primarily Colorado is predicted to be above those numbers for 2011, with still some shaky times ahead, but generally better overall economic news. Overall regional and local predictions were all over the board with changes very dramatic depending on many local factors.

The Remodeling Futures Program, developed by the Joint Center for Housing Studies in 1995, is a comprehensive study of factors influencing growth and economic issues of the housing renovation and repair sector of the building industry.
