Why Hire an ASID Designer? Founded in 1975 with the consolidation of the American Institute of Decorators (AID) and the National Society of Interior Designers (NSID), the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) is the oldest, largest and leading professional organization for interior designers. Its more than 38,000 members engage in a variety of professional programs and activities through a network of 48 chapters in the U.S. and Canada.
ASID is a community of people—designers, industry representatives, educators and students—committed to interior design. Through education, knowledge sharing, advocacy, community building and outreach, the Society strives to advance the interior design profession and positively change people’s lives through the power of design.
Professional ASID members must pass rigorous acceptance standards: a combination of accredited design education and/or full-time work experience and pass a two-day accreditation examination administered by the National Council for Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ). Rita Peterson has earned this prestigious accreditation.
ASID designers receive the most current information on appropriate materials, technology, building codes, government regulations, health & safety standards, design psychology and product performance.
What is a CAPS designation? The National Association of Home Builders Remodelers, NAHB Research Center and Seniors Housing Council - in collaboration with the AARP - developed the Certified Aging-in-Place (CAPS) program to provide comprehensive, practical, market-specific information about working with older and maturing adults to remodel their homes for aging in place.
Aging in place means remaining in one’s home safely, independently and comfortably, regardless of age, income or ability level. It means the pleasure of living in a familiar environment throughout one’s maturing years, and the ability to enjoy the familiar daily rituals and the special events that enrich all our lives. It means the reassurance of being able to call a house a “home” for a lifetime.
In a multi-class education and testing program, CAPS teaches the strategies and techniques for marketing, designing and building aesthetically enriching, barrier-free living environments. This program goes beyond universal design, CAPS addresses the communication and technical needs of this market. Bob & Rita Peterson were the first contractor and interior designer in Colorado to earn their designations in 2000.
