One of the many services that Associates in Building + Design offers is helping homeowners recover when disaster strikes. Homeowners Ron and Roxie Madrid experienced flooding throughout their home in 2015 after two tornadoes touched down just south of their home. The storm brought with it torrential hail and rain, and the Madrid’s irrigation ditches filled up with so much hail that there was nowhere for the rain to go except across their front yard and into the septic tank and leech field. In addition, the carport had an astounding three feet of standing water in it! Once the storm caused the power to go out and the sump pump to stop working, the damage to their home was done.

Bob Peterson, founder and owner of ABD, and Project Consultant Mark Deines were quick to respond when Ron and Roxie called, as they understood the importance of mitigating the dangers of mold developing in the home. After reviewing the damage and the renovations the Madrid’s had in mind, the ABD team recommended a full rebuild to the home. The ABD team explained that the expense to remodel the home in its current state would be equal to building from the ground up, as it would take an additional six to eight weeks to work around the existing structure.

Mark and Bob requested a wish list of items from the Madrid’s, including what their must-haves were and what they liked but could live without if necessary. The architect then came to the home, measured everything and created a new plan based on the old home and the Madrid’s wish list. After a few tweaks, the new home essentially became an expanded version of the original home with a few twists.

The new ranch home with a basement is twice the size as the original home and features a beautiful, comfortable and cozy layout. It starts with an open living area combining the living room, dining room and kitchen, which is considerably larger and complete with an island and butler’s pantry. The Madrid’s originally requested a walk-in pantry, but the ABD recommended implementing a butler’s pantry due to the amount of kitchen storage that is available in the new home. The new living room offers soaring 10-foot ceilings and a beautiful brick fireplace that was recovered from the original home.

The Madrid’s also wanted a spacious master suite on the main living level convenient to the new laundry room. The master bedroom is complete with a walk-in closet and incredible bathroom, while the laundry room is separated from the other living areas by a customized barn door. Also located on the main floor is a spacious coat closet for storing the many accessories needed to go outside during a Colorado winter.

The last interior request the Madrid’s had was for two additional bedrooms and a full bathroom downstairs, offering plenty of space and privacy for visiting guests.

One of Ron and Roxie’s favorite features from their home that they knew was a must-have in the new home was the beautiful wraparound deck. This favorite place for relaxing was incorporated into the new structure, taking in the sweeping panoramic views around them. Also taking advantage of the gorgeous views of Mount Meeker and Long’s Peak is the new picture window on the west side of the home, which the homeowners specifically requested.

In addition to the interior changes the Madrid’s wanted in their home, they also wanted new features to the outside. The couple decided to install French drains on their property to ensure they never had to deal with a catastrophic flooding situation again.

“Throughout the entire process, the ABD team was sure to listen to our ideas and questions for our new home,” said Roxie Madrid. “And they provided us with the answers and the pros and cons for each request we made to ensure we were fully educated when making a final decision.”

The rebuild process included the initial consultation with the architect once the Madrid’s decided to do a rebuild, followed by time working with the interior designer to choose everything for the home, including the cabinets, flooring, windows, granite options, colors in the home, handles, knobs and more. In addition, the Madrid’s had a project manager from the ABD team that consulted with them every step of the way.
