2019 Color of the YearFrom a Living Coral and Warm Clay to a calming gray and Blueprint blue, the top color trend predictions for 2019 are carefully reflecting the world around us. Color is much more than a decoration; it influences how we feel and often how we act. And in our homes, it sets the tone for what furniture we buy, the decor we invest in and the overall design of a room.

One of the most well-known predictors for anticipating top color trends for fashion and design is Pantone. According to the color experts at Pantone, they are going under the sea to pick the next popular color as they have chosen Living Coral as 2019’s Color of the Year. The pink-orange nature-inspired hue is described as, “an animating and life-affirming shade of orange with a golden undertone.”

Living Coral embraces the world with warmth and nourishment to provide comfort and buoyancy in the continually shifting environment; just as a coral reef sources sustenance and shelter to sea life. Similar to the 2018 color of the year, Living coral is also a meant to be a happy counterpoint to the less pleasant parts of modern life, Pantone states. As bright as it may be, Living Coral is both energizing and enlivening and can easily be incorporated into your home. For a more subtle look, try finding furniture and accessories as statement pieces. Here in Colorado, we’ve recently seen paints and wallpapers in Living Coral become a new trend.

The new rich, luxurious and classic shade of green known as Night Watch will be PPG’s 2019 Color of the Year. This beautiful, versatile shade allows spaces to emulate the feeling of lush greenery and the healing power of nature. “The restorative power of nature is important in society now more than ever,” explains PPG Senior Color Marketing Manager. “Night Watch is about bringing the healing power from the outdoors into your home through color. The dark green hue pulls our memories of natural environments to the surface to recreate the calming, invigorating euphoria we feel when in nature.”

The 2019 Color of the Year can be incorporated as a focal accent wall in a bedroom or dining room. It can be especially impactful in places without any view to the outdoors, like a hallway.  For exteriors, Night Watch is a gorgeous alternative to the trending black or deepest blue-black, and it works well as an accent on doors and shutters.

Sherwin-Williams Cavern Clay

Sherwin-Williams forecasts warmer walls ahead for 2019, naming Cavern Clay (SW 7701) as their Color of the Year. The warm, earthy terracotta color is a refreshing take to the midcentury modern rust shades and is opposite from last year’s pick, Oceanside. “We believe 2019 will be a renaissance of the 1970s, with a twist,” states Director of Color Marketing at Sherwin-Williams.  “In the coming year, we will embrace our pioneering spirits and artisan ingenuity. Our 2019 Color of the Year, Cavern Clay, embodies renewal, simplicity and free-spirited, bohemian flair.”

When paired with the right colors, Cavern Clay works as a timeless backdrop for a variety of styles in all rooms. Sherwin-Williams suggests pairing with Cavern Clay with Moth Wing (SW 9174) or Dark Clove (SW 9183) for a more carefree, sophisticated look. To embrace popular 70s color palettes with a refreshed approach, try the dusty denim blue or even an avocado color.

Benjamin Moore

In 2018, home design and fashion got hot with Benjamin Moore’s Caliente color of the year! For 2019, they are toning it down by naming the calming and sophisticated gray hue known as Metropolitan (AF-690). “Comforting, composed and effortlessly sophisticated, Metropolitan exudes beauty and balance,” said Benjamin Moore Director of Strategic Design Intelligence. “It’s a color in the neutral spectrum that references a contemplative state of mind and design. Not arresting nor aggressive, this understated yet glamorous gray creates a soothing, impactful common ground.”

If you’re over the all-white-everything look but still want a calming, neutral canvas for your home, Metropolitan is what you’re looking for. This soothing color pairs well with ethereal neutrals, frothy pinks and rich blues and greens.

An honest, approachable color that conjures up the blueprints builders rely on to bring architectural designs to life, 2019 Color of the Year. Blueprint (S470-5) creates a space where you can build your own re-imagined life, where awareness of what we want to build for ourselves can transform into action. Blueprint is a mid-tone blue that’s warmer than denim and softer than navy; a deeper blue than last year’s in the Moment.

While Blueprint is a striking color, Behr’s Vice President of Color and Creative Services explains the paint’s name suggests how the color can serve as a starting point for the design process for homeowners and apartment dwellers. “Much like the sketches builders rely on to bring an architectural design to life, Blueprint lays a foundation for consumers to make their unique vision a reality.” This beautiful, bold color looks fantastic on front doors, accent walls, bathrooms and bedrooms.
